USA Deaf Track and Field
Athletes of the Year

Williard Moers, Colorado, is voted as the 2001 USADTF Male Athlete of the Year.  As 6 time Deaflympian, he has captured 5 gold medals and a bronze in hammer.  Competing with bad knees, he hauled the hammer to take the Gold at Rome. He does not allow his age, 42, stop him from doing what he loves to do.  He also won 6th straight bronze finish in discus. At the end of the award ceremony, he announced that coming back for 7th is not out of question!

Shana Lehmann, Maryland, impressed everyone on the USA Track and Field team as well as Europeans. Only 14 years old, she showed maturity of an older, experienced runner.  She is voted as Co-winner of the 2001 USADTF Female Athlete of the Year.  Although, she did not win any individual medals, she anchored the 4 x 400 team for the silver.  It was how she ran that won everyone's admiration. Her leg time was believed to be in 56-57 seconds range. USADTF looks forward to many Deaflympic medals coming from that young lady.

Heather Lightfoot, Washington, the 2000 USADSF Female Athlete of the Year, shares the 2001 USADTF Female Athlete of the Year with a teammate from the USA team. She continues to dominate the women hammer.  She led over all other throwers by some 25 feet.  In addition to her World Record winning performance, she also placed 2nd in discus. Heather plans to continue her dominance in hammer for years to come.
